Creation of Modern Jain
Panchang
It is
interesting to know the story of how Modern Jain Panchang was created.
Twenty years
ago, the commonly available Jain Panchang was in the form of a book. As
a result, on certain TITHI Days like "Chaudas", one may cook green
vegetables, and then on opening the book-Panchang, one would realize and
repent because green vegetables should not have been be cooked on such
days, as per Jain religion.
The problem
was solved with a simple solution. The Panchang was made in the form of
a wall-calendar, and it
displayed in red, all
TITHIs on which green vegetables should not be cooked and eaten.
Thus Modern
Jain Panchang was created,
20 years back. Below is
the story how we started it
and our goals to do so.
-
Mr. Ajitbhai Shah, my college
friend, and myself jointly created this
Modern Jain Panchang, 20 years ago. He utilized his knowledge of
Jainism to create a correct Panchang, as per Jain religion, while I
gave user-friendly shape to achieve the two main goals of Panchang,
viz.,
1) The
Panchang should remain open so that the TITHIS are visible all the time,
(that is why it is a wall mounted) and
2) The
TITHIs, on which green vegetables should not be taken, should be marked
red.
-
The Guru Maharaj who has
guided us about the details of Panchang, has been Acharya Shree
Yashodevsuriji, of Jain Sahitya Mandir, Palitana.
